After Traci tried on the headdress, I noticed that the pink and her red hair clashed a bit. I don’t mind having a little pink here and there, but I think I’ll keep the costume mostly blue and green, and in turn will really make her hair color pop (with red and green being complementary colors). As such, I’m giving the headdress and necklace a wash of blue paint to make it look sea-aged.
The beautiful mermaid tail was ordered from Mertailor.com. These latex tails are amazing! They have a monofin inside the tail so you can actually swim in these! I’m really excited that she can get this costume wet for the photoshoot with our worrying that the water will ruin it. I did some touch-ups on the tail with with blue createx paint.
I’ve always loved the the grooved surface of brain coral, so I used painted lace over a bra to give the same effect. I then layered crinkled silk over the bra cup, shredding the ends and cutting holes so the coral peeks through. Painted beaded appliques were then sewn around the outside cupping the bra. I’m thinking of coating the inside with latex, then gluing the cups on.
Next, I will be fitting Traci to see where I need to cut the top of the tail, and adding the hip fin.
