Basic Sewing

Q:

Hello! I've always wanted to ask, how long did it take you to learn how to sew so well? I'm just recently learning, and I hope someday I'll be able to construct costumes as professionally and beautifully as you do, but there's so much to remember and learn, it feels as if it'll be years and years before I'll be able to make anything presentable. You seem to have been making costumes for a couple of years, but even back then (judging by your older photos) they were great! Also, do you have any tips for novice cosplayers just learning to sew?

Thanks!
~Stephanie

Hello Stephanie
First of all you should be proud of yourself for trying to learn something new. Constructing a garment takes practice, so don't get upset if your garment doesn't turn out exactly how you imagined it. I can't even begin to tell you how frustrated I use to get trying to make my costume come together nicely. Every one has to start at the beginning. Just like any thing; the more you practice the better you will become.

For starters you can buy a pattern that is easy to understand. Patterns like "Simplicity" and "McCall's" are great for beginners. You can find these at your local fabric store and Wal-Mart. For practice pick a pattern of a simple shirt or skirt. You will want to buy cheap fabric like muslin, its usually $1.00-$2.00 a yard to create whats called a "mock up". Its and exact replica of what you will be creating with your expensive fabric. Think of it as making a prototype before the real thing. Read though the instructions a few times before you get started. Once you have constructed a few basic garments you can gradually try out more complex patterns.
You can always enroll in a sewing class! Usually fabric stores offer classes, plus nothing beats a personal lesson from professional. There are also sites on-line that can help you answer simple sewing question like THIS one.

Oh! Handmaid May was the first Anime cosplay costume I made. I made quite a few before that are not on my site. Needless to say they were very poorly made compared to what I can produce now. BUT! I was so excited that I made a costume by myself I didn't care. The important thing is that you take joy in creating something. Don't worry about being up to par with everyone else. Remember cosplay is for fun!

Good luck!
