Mermaid Fins

Q:

Hiya! I was watching your gallery on Deviant art and saw some pretty neat stuff. I was wondering if you could help me out a bit, since I'm making a sea goddess/mermaid costume but don't know just how to make the fins...Could you give me some tips on how you make yours? (well, you make wings, but i could modify the shape...I think).

Thanks again Adriana

Hello Adriana!
How exciting, I'm a huge mer fan! You got the right idea about using the same method as the faerie wings. Make one fin the same way as I made the wings in my "wing tutorial" except only make one. For organza I'd choose either blue or green. Once you are done covering the wire frame in organza fabric use the two extra lengths of wire to twine them together to form a loop. Wrap batting around this loop to form the base of the fin. Cut the tail part to a V shape on both the top and bottom. Pull the tail over the base of the fin and hand stitch all three layer together. Lastly you can embellish the fins and tail by sewing on pearls or sequins. Even little bits of seaweed and shells would be cute!

Good luck on your mer-tail!
